What We Do
Approaches
There are no "proven" approaches to deal with the orphan and vulnerable children crisis.
There are, however, existing community-based efforts that show promising results. These initiatives are managed by talented, committed, and entrepreneurial men and women who have taken on the responsibility to raise a large number of children in addition to their own. In these settings, orphaned children ‘belong’ to a community, where they can develop friendships with their peers, and experience nurturing relationships with young people and adults actively involved in caring for them.
Bantwana identifies promising community efforts and helps local teams build technical, management, strategic, and advocacy skills that bring to bear the resources and political will necessary to affect this growing crisis.
"I'm investing in Bantwana because I believe in the approach. Though well-intentioned, large-scale programs are not directly benefiting orphans and vulnerable children. We first need to understand what works on the ground before we reach for scale."
